Behind it lay the doors to the Ink Demon’s lair. The massive structure of the Ink Machine’s giant mechanisms loomed above him, chains rattling and gears grinding. It was only then that he realized where he’d been taken. He staggered back, finding a wooden structure behind him and pulling himself onto it. Henry sank through the once-firm bottom of the ink dome into a pool of the stuff that was waist-deep. Then the space jolted upwards and popped like an enormous tar bubble. For a long, horrified moment, Henry wondered if Joey just intended to leave him here in this featureless prison. He was trapped in a tiny sphere of solid ink. The walls, the ceiling, the floor, all were glistening black. Finally, the artist looked around at his surroundings. He sat back on his knees, wincing in pain from his scratched arm. His chest tightened and he rolled over, propping himself up on his elbows cough violently, droplets of ink expelled from his throat.
